I’ll never be able to speak what i truly feel. I think that’s why God made rains. For people who are constantly, persistently trying to be happy. For people like us, who can only speak words and thoughts to ourselves.
When everything seems to go the other way, all you need is a good companion and a majestic sunset to tell it’s going to be fine. Maybe not today, not tomorrow, but it gives you the assurance that everything will be fine.
Hi Guys, This was my first hiking adventure and I would like to share what happened, what did not, as well as my experience all throughout the climb.
Altitude: 1846 MASL (Mt. Ulap)
Location: Brgy. Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2-3 hours
Specs: Difficulty 3/9, Trail class 1-3,
I was actually hesitant to come with my friends because I’ve never done Hiking before and I am really the type of person who likes to be invited but doesn’t want to go anywhere. I don’t know if you’d call that an Introvert. Though I have read on websites that Mt. Ulap is relatively easy to climb and the ideal mountain for beginners. I ended up joining them and it was the best decision I’ve made in my life so far.
So from Manila, Philippines to Baguio, it took us nearly 6-hour drive. That was unusually fast because it was raining and it’s holiday so most people would opt to stay in the house and watch movies whilst eating popcorn or whatever food they like. Then from Baguio to Itogon, Benguet it took us half hour to get there, and then registered to start the climb.
We arrived at the registration office at almost 19:00 and we started hiking at 19:30. The weather is a bit cold, ranging from 24C to 21C and I obviously had no idea that it would come to this point, didn’t bring any sweater. Yes, i can call it cold because Manila’s weather can be as scorching as 32C to 39C. The trail is a combination of Grasslands and a majestic view of Pine forest. No need to worry about big sharp rocks and leeches because none is present there. While climbing, if you’re lucky, you’ll get the chance to see beautiful city lights. Unfortunately, i don’t what city that is, presumably Baguio City since it’s the nearest one there. It took us roughly 2H30Min to get to the summit, that includes our water breaks of course. We set up our camping tent and enjoyed a star-studded night sky.
We woke up at 4:00 to prepare ourselves for sunrise and sea of clouds. Among us, I was certain I’m the one who didn’t get the most sleep because it’s too cold to sleep, really too cold and primarily I can’t wait to get out of the camping tent and see the sun as it rises. So from the camping site, we went to the summit and watched the sunrise. I guess it’s true what people say, that time passes so fast when you’re happy. Because it all went too fast. I felt the cloud passing through me, I can literally touch them!. We stayed there for almost an hour until it’s already time for our descent. The descent was pretty much like the ascent. On our way down, we side-tripped to Gungal Rock, which is a beauty in itself. We also went to the mountains of balanced rocks, I made one myself but not as high as the others.
It was truly a great and one of a kind experience. It was a short but perfect time to “socially” disconnect yourself from the stress of this world and reconnect with mother nature.
We are all too smart to live in this world. Too smart and too cautious. Afraid to live life on our own terms. Always wary of what’s inside other people’s heads. We value their opinion more than what we feel about ourselves. Often times, we forget who we really are. Then one moment you realize that you have never lived at all.
